Advantages of Xenon Light Bulbs
Longer Lamp Life
In general, xenon light bulbs last longer than similar halogen light bulbs. Some xenon light bulbs last up to 100,000 hours!
Touch the Glass All You Want
Unlike halogen light bulbs xenon light bulbs may be touched by bare hands without the oil from your hands severely reducing the rated life of the lamps.
More Tolerant of Unstable Voltages
Halogen light bulbs burn out easily when unstable voltage is applied to them (like in the marine industry). However, xenon light bulbs are much more tolerant of unstable voltages, which results in longer life.
Minimal UV Rays
The ultraviolet rays from halogen lamps can seriously damage fabrics and art work. Xenon light bulbs, on the other hand, emit minimal UV rays, which make them ideal for lighting sensitive fabric and art work.
No High Pressure Danger
One of the biggest concerns with halogen light bulbs is that the gas inside the glass envelope is under relatively high pressure, which can become a safety concern. With xenon light bulbs the gas inside the glass envelope is under much lower pressure, which means they are less prone to "non-passive failure". This, in turn, means that xenon light bulbs are not required to have a glass cover and if a glass cover is used to diffuse the light that the glass diffuser does not have to be tempered.
Lower Temperature
In general, xenon light bulbs operate at lower temperatures than similar halogen light bulbs.
Dimmable
Xenon light bulbs may be easily dimmed, which lengthens the life of the lamp, reduces energy costs, and controls the light levels to suit the situation.
Excellent Color Rendering
Xenon light bulbs have an excellent color rendering index (CRI) of 100.
Xenon Light Bulbs FAQ
- Q) What makes these light bulbs xenon light bulbs?
- A) Xenon gas has been introduced into the glass envelope of the lamp.
- Q) Why is xenon gas added into the glass envelope of the light bulb?
- A) The addition of this gas into the glass envelope increases the rated life of the lamp.
- Q) What is the rated life of xenon light bulbs?
- A) Depending on the xenon light bulb usually between 8,000 and 20,000 hours but sometimes even as much as 100,000 hours.
- Q) What does "rated life" mean?
- A) The "rated life" of a lamp signifies the time at which 50% of a large quantity of these lamps will have burned out. That means that 50% of these lamps will burn out BEFORE the "rated life" and 50% will burn out AFTER the "rated life". The "rated life" does NOT mean that every one of the lamps will last at least that long.
- Q) Is this definition of "rated life" true for all light bulbs?
- A) Yes, this is the standard rating for the life of ALL lamps.
- Q) Do xenon light bulbs operate cooler than halogen light bulbs?
- A) Yes, they do - especially cooler than the line voltage halogen lamps.
- Q) Are xenon light bulbs dimmable?
- A) Definitely.
- Q) What kind of dimmer should be used with xenon light bulbs?
- A) If the xenon lamp is powered by line voltage (120 volts) and, therefore, uses no transformer, then the dimmer should be one that is designed to control line voltage. If the xenon lamp is powered by an electronic low voltage transformer, then the dimmer should be one that is designed to control an electronic low voltage transformer. If the xenon lamp is powered by a magnetic low voltage transformer, then the dimmer should be one that is designed to control a magnetic low voltage transformer.
- Q) What "kind of light" is given off by xenon light bulbs?
- A) Xenon lamps have a Color Temperature that is between ordinary incandescent and halogen. That is, the light is cooler in appearance than incandescent but warmer in appearance than halogen.
- Q) Do I have to be concerned about touching a xenon light bulb with my bare hands?
- A) Unlike JC halogen lamps xenon lamps may be handled with bare hands without experiencing premature lamp failure.
- Q) Can I replace my halogen light bulbs with comparable xenon light bulbs?
- A) Yes, as long as the xenon lamp has the same wattage rating, the same voltage rating, the same type of base (bipin, wedge, etc.), and the same size glass envelope as the halogen lamp.
