- DIMMABILITY
Q) Which under cabinet lights are dimmable?
- A) All of the xenon under cabinet lights are fully dimmable. For a full description of all of the dimmable under cabinet lights please examine this section: Dimmable Under Cabinet Lighting. The LED Under Cabinet Task Light w/28 LEDs is not dimmable, per se, but it does have two brightness levels: full brightness and half brightness. None of the under cabinet fluorescent lights can be dimmed.
- Q) Why are none of the under cabinet fluorescent lights dimmable?
- A) In order for any fluorescent light fixture to be dimmable it must have a special dimmable fluorescent ballast, which is large in size and expensive.
- Q) Will the xenon light bulbs last longer when they are dimmed?
- A) Absolutely. If the xenon light bulbs are dimmed just 10%, they will last twice as long; if they are dimmed by 25%, they will last 4 times as long; and if they are dimmed by 50%, they will last a whopping 20x as long.
- Q) What type of dimmer should be used with a xenon under cabinet light?
- A) If the xenon under cabinet light uses line voltage (120 volts) to operate the light bulbs, then a line voltage dimmer can be used. If, however, the xenon under cabinet light uses an electronic low voltage (12 volts) transformer to power the light bulbs, then an electronic low voltage dimmer should be used and if the xenon under cabinet light uses an magnetic low voltage (12 volts or 24 volts) transformer to power the light bulbs (this is possible but less likely), then a magnetic low voltage dimmer should be used.
- ENERGY EFFICIENT
Q) Which under cabinet lights are energy efficient?
- A) The most energy efficient under cabinet light fixture is the LED Under Cabinet Task Light w/28 LEDs. All of the fluorescent under cabinet lights are very energy efficient to operate. Fluorescent fixtures are always more efficient than incandescent fixtures including xenon and halogen light fixtures. For a full description of all of our energy efficient under cabinet lights please examine this section: Energy Efficient Under Cabinet Lighting.
- Q) Will the xenon light bulbs become more energy efficient when they are dimmed?
- A) Absolutely. If the xenon light bulbs are dimmed by 10%, they will consume 10% less electrical energy; if they are dimmed by 25%, they will use 20% less energy; and if they are dimmed by 50%, they will consume 40% less energy.

- HEAT
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are cool to the touch?
- A) The LED Task Light w/28 LEDs is the coolest to the touch. All of the fluorescent under cabinet lights give off very little heat and are very warm to the touch. The xenon (pronounced ze-non) under cabinet lights are hotter than the fluorescent lights but are still cooler than halogen light fixtures. To learn which under cabinet lights are the hottest please click Hot Under Cabinet Lights.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are hot to the touch?
- A) Any under cabinet light fixture that uses line voltage (120 volts) halogen lighting with no transformer is the hottest type of under cabinet light fixture. It is for this reason that we do not sell any under cabinet fixtures of this type. To learn which fixtures are the coolest please click Cool Under Cabinet Lights.
- INSTALLATION
- Q) Which under cabinet lights may be surface mounted?
- A) A light fixture that is surface mounted is simply mounted on a surface whereas a recessed mounted fixture is mounted in a surface. All of our under cabinet fixtures may be surface mounted whereas only 4 of them may also be recessed mounted if need be. For a full description of all of our surface mount under cabinet lights please examine this section: Surface Mount Under Cabinet Lighting. To learn which fixtures can be recessed mounted please click Recessed Under Cabinet Lighting.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights may be recessed mounted?
- A) The Xenon Puck Lights, the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights, the Xenon Gemstone Lights, and the Xenon Eyelid Light may all be recessed mounted. All of the other under cabinet light fixtures may only be surface mounted. For a full description of all of our recessed under cabinet lights please examine this section: Recessed Under Cabinet Lighting. To learn which fixtures can be surface mounted please click Surface Mount Under Cabinet Lighting.
- Q) Once they're installed which under cabinet lights can be adjusted?
- A) The Fluorescent T4 Swing-Down Fixtures and the Fluorescent T5 Swivel Sticks can be adjusted after they've been installed. Once they are mounted each of these under cabinet lights can be rotated a full 180 degrees.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are easy to install?
- A) If a single light fixture is being installed, any of the Microfluorescent Fixtures or the Fluorescent Swivel Sticks are probably the easiest to install. If a group of light fixtures is being installed, any of the Microfluorescent Fixtures are probably the easiest to install. The Xenon Low Voltage Light Strip is probably the most time-consuming to install.
- Q) Is there a way I can tell how easy any one of the under cabinet lights is to install?
- A) Yes. At the bottom of each Description tab for each under cabinet light product page you will see an "Installation Difficulty" graphic that looks like the one below. We rank the ease of installing our lighting products from 1 "wrench" (very easy) to 5 "wrenches" (will take some time or patience or professional expertise). We tend to be a bit conservative with our estimates of difficulty. That is, we would rather judge a product to be a little more difficult to install than you might so that you will not be disappointed with the time that it takes to install a given lighting product.
1 Wrench - It doesn't get any easier than this
2 Wrenches - Pretty easy
3 Wrenches - Somewhat easy
4 Wrenches - Requires some effort but not a great deal of effort
5 Wrenches - Will take some time or patience or professional expertise
- Q) Where can I find the installation instructions for a given under cabinet light?
- A) The installation instructions for a given under cabinet light can be found on the Description tab of the product page for that under cabinet light - usually in the sub-section entitled "Installation".
- Q) What should I do if I need assistance with installing the under cabinet lights?
- A) If you have a simple straight-forward question that does not seem to be answered by the Installation Instructions found on the Description tab of the appropriate product page, then you can email us using the Contact Us form or call us at our toll-free phone number, 800.392.4818.
- Q) What should I do if I need still more assistance with a challenging installation of the under cabinet lights?
- A) You will find a variety of very good resources at a section called Installation of Lighting Products.

- LIGHT BULBS
Q) Which under cabinet lights are supplied with light bulbs?
- A) All of the under cabinet light fixtures are supplied with their own light bulbs except for the Xenon Low Voltage Light Strip and the Hera Fluorescent T5 SlimLite XL Light Fixtures. With these two light fixtures the light bulbs must be purchased separately.
- Q) Which light bulbs have long rated lives?
- A) Without question the LEDs used in the LED Under Cabinet Task Light have the longest rated life at 50,000+ hours. The fluorescent light bulbs have a rated life of about 5.000 hours to 20,000 hours depending on the type of light bulb and the light fixture in which it's used. The xenon light bulbs have a rated life of about 8,000 hours to 10,000 hours depending on the type of light bulb and the light fixture in which it's used.
- LIGHTING QUALITY
- Q) What is the primary purpose of under cabinet lighting?
- A) First and foremost, good under cabinet lighting can and should provide high quality task lighting that allows you to sort, mix, cut, shred, slice, dice, mince, stir, and cook a great variety of food ingredients. At the same time under cabinet lighting can provide a certain amount of general lighting to the space and a bit of accent lighting to enhance the beauty of your back splash area and countertops.
- Q) Why don't you include LED Rope Light as one of the many ways to provide under cabinet lighting?
- A) Our LED Rope Light could be used to provide under cabinet lighting; however, we feel that the amount of light provided would only be minimal. That is, the LED rope light would provide good accent light but probably not enough for good task lighting, which we believe is the primary purpose of good under cabinet lighting.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights produce light that is similar to incandescent light?
- A) All of the xenon light fixtures use xenon light bulbs, which are incandescent light sources with a little bit of xenon gas introduced into the glass envelope to help lengthen the life of the lamp. Therefore, all the xenon light fixtures produce the familiar warm glow (low color temperature) of an incandescent light bulb. If the fluorescent light fixture uses a warm white fluorescent light bulb or one that has a low color temperature of 3200K or lower, then it, too, will look very much like an incandescent light bulb.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights will produce little or no reflections in a granite counter top?
- A) The very nature of light is to behave in certain predictable ways and, unfortunately in this case, one of those very predictable behaviors is to reflect off highly polished surfaces like granite. Therefore, regrettably, there are no under cabinet lights that cannot be seen in a highly polished granite surface and there is no light fixture location under the cabinet that will prevent these reflections.
- Q) Which fluorescent under cabinet lights turn on instantly with no flickering?
- A) All of the fluorescent fixtures turn on instantly without flickering because they all have instant start electronic ballasts. All of the xenon fixtures, of course, turn on instantly because they are forms of incandescent lighting. The LED Under Cabinet Task Light w/28 LEDs also turns on instantly with no flickering.

- POPULAR
Q) Which under cabinet lights are popular?
- A) The Xenon LINE Voltage Thin Task Lights, the Xenon LOW Voltage Task Lights, the Xenon Low Voltage Light Strip, the Xenon Puck Lights, the Fluorescent T5 Thin-Inch Fixtures, and the Microfluorescent T4 Fixtures are all very popular under cabinet lights.
- POWER, ELECTRICAL
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are considered to be line voltage fixtures (120 volts)?
- A) Any light fixture that uses the available voltage (usually 120 volts) directly and does not use a transformer to step down the voltage from line voltage to low voltage (12 volts or 24 volts) is considered to be a line voltage fixture. Thus, the Xenon Line Voltage Thin Task Lights, the Xenon Line Voltage Standard Task Lights, and all of the fluorescent fixtures are considered to be line voltage light fixtures.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are considered to be low voltage fixtures (12 or 24 volts)?
- A) Any light fixture that uses a transformer so that the light bulbs operate on 12 volts or 24 volts is considered to be a low voltage fixture. The transformer may be located inside the fixture or it may be located outside the fixture at a "remote" location; thus, the low voltage fixture will have either an integral transformer or a remote transformer. The Xenon Low Voltage Task Lights (integral), the Xenon Light Strip (remote), the Xenon Puck Lights (remote), the Xenon Triangle Lights (remote), and the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights (remote), the Xenon Gemstone Lights (remote), and the Xenon Eyeball Light (remote) are all considered to be low voltage light fixtures. None of the fluorescent light fixtures are considered to be low voltage light fixtures. To learn which fixtures are considered to be line voltage please click Line Voltage Under Cabinet Lights.
- Q) Are low voltage under cabinet lights connected directly to a source of 12-volt or 24-volt electricity?
- A) No. Both line voltage and low voltage under cabinet lights are connected directly to a source of 120-volt electricity. However, a low voltage light fixture has a transformer that "transforms" the 120V electricity to 12V or 24V electricity for the light bulbs in light fixture.
- SIZE, FIXTURE
- Q) Which under cabinet lights have a low profile?
- A) The Xenon Light Strip has dimensions of only 7/8in inches total width by 1.0 inches total height (including the Mounting Channel) while the Microfluorescent T4 Fixtures have dimensions of only 0.75 inches wide by 1.38 inches high. Both the Xenon Puck Lights and the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights, when recessed mounted, stick down only 0.25 inches from the “ceiling” of the cabinet.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are small?
- A) The smallest under cabinet lights are the hockey-puck-like fixtures like the Xenon Low Voltage Puck Light, the Xenon Eyelid Light, the Xenon Gemstone Lights, the Xenon Triangle Lights, and the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights. For a full description of all of our under cabinet puck lights please examine this section: Under Cabinet Puck Lights. The shortest under cabinet light that is rectangular in shape is the 10-inch Xenon Line Voltage Thin Task Light. If you are not certain about which length fixtures you should purchase, please consult the Measurement Guides found on each of the under cabinet fixture pages.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are long?
- A) The longest under cabinet light product is the Xenon Low Voltage Light Strip. Because of its very nature it can be almost any length that it needs to be. Excluding this lighting product the longest light fixture is the 59.0in Hera Fluorescent T5 SlimLite XL Light Fixture. If you are not certain about which length fixtures you should purchase, please consult the Measurement Guides found on each of the under cabinet fixture product pages. For a full description of all of our linear under cabinet lights please examine this section: Linear Under Cabinet Lighting.

- SWITCHING
Q) Which under cabinet lights come with their own on/off switches?
- A) The Xenon LINE Voltage Thin Task Lights, the Xenon LINE Voltage Standard Task Lights, the Xenon LOW Voltage Task Lights come with their own hi/lo/off rocker switches. Most of the Microfluorescent Light Fixtures, the Fluorescent Swing-Down Fixtures, all of the Fluorescent Thin-Inch Fixtures, and all of the Fluorescent Swivel Sticks come with their own on/off rocker switches.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights can be installed so that a group of them can be controlled by a wall light switch?
- A) When several under cabinet lights are being installed the LED Task Light w/28 LEDs, all of the xenon light fixtures, and all but one of the fluorescent light fixtures can all be controlled by a single wall light switch. Only a group of Fluorescent Swivel Sticks cannot be controlled by one wall light switch; each of these units is plugged into a separate receptacle and. therefore, works independently.
- TRANSFORMERS
Q) Which under cabinet lights use low voltage transformers?
- A) All of the xenon low voltage under cabinet lights use transformers. This includes the Xenon Low Voltage Task Lights, the Xenon Light Strip, the Xenon Puck Lights, the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights, the Xenon Triangle Lights, the Xenon Gemstone Lights, and the Xenon Eyelid Light.
- Q) Which xenon under cabinet lights have integral transformers?
- A) Only the Xenon Low Voltage Task Lights have a transformer located inside each fixture.
- Q) Which xenon under cabinet lights use remote transformers?
- A) The Xenon Light Strip, the Xenon Puck Lights, the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights, the Xenon Triangle Lights, the Xenon Gemstone Lights, and the Xenon Eyelid Light all use remote transformers. This means that the installer can select both the size (wattage) and the type of transformer (electronic or magnetic; hardwire or plug-in; AC or DC; 12 volts or 24 volts) to be used as well as the location for the transformer(s).
- Q) Where should a remote transformer be located for under cabinet lights?
- A) A remote transformer for under cabinet lights can be located in a variety of locations such as under the cabinet along with the lights, inside the cabinet above the lights, inside the cabinet below the lights, above the cabinets that are above the lights, or even in the basement below. There are also several things to remember in choosing a location for a remote transformer. For example, the transformer should be out of sight, it should be out of the way of normal activities, it should be located as close as possible to the lights to avoid voltage drop, and it should be easily accessible. Since a transformer must be easily accessible at all times it should not be installed behind a wall or some other inaccessible location.
- Q) What wattage should be selected for the remote transformer?
- A) The wattage rating of the remote transformer should always be equal to or greater than the total wattage of the under cabinet lights that it is powering.
- Q) Should an electronic or a magnetic transformer be selected for the remote transformer?
- A) If the wattage of your low voltage lighting system is 300 watts or less, you should probably select an electronic transformer. If, on the other hand, the wattage of your low voltage lighting system is greater than 300 watts, you should probably select a toroidal magnetic transformer.
- Q) Should a hardwire or a plug-in transformer be selected for the remote transformer?
- A) If you would prefer not to take on the extra work of hardwiring your under cabinet lights or if you plan to move the under cabinet lights within a short period of time, then you will probably want to use a plug-in transformer.
- Q) Should an AC or a DC transformer be selected for the remote transformer?
- A) Ordinarily an AC (alternating current) transformer is fine for most installations. However, if the transformer needs to be located at a distance from the lighting system, then you should consider using a DC (direct current) transformer, which will virtually eliminate the problem of voltage drop in long electrical circuits.
- Q) Should a 12-volt or a 24-volt transformer be selected for the remote transformer?
- A) For most low voltage lighting systems a 12-volt transformer is fine. However, for long runs of the Xenon Light Strip you consider using a 24-volt transformer. (Caution: If you do select a 24V transformer for your Xenon Light Strip, please remember to always use xenon festoon light bulbs and MR11 halogen light bulbs that are rated for 24 volts.)
- Q) What are the advantages and disadvantages of an under cabinet light that needs a transformer to operate?
- A) In general, a low voltage xenon under cabinet light gives off with a little less heat than a line voltage xenon under cabinet light. However, low voltage xenon under cabinet light must use a transformer to power the light bulbs and the transformer is one more component that can go bad over time and, therefore, require a replacement. If a low voltage xenon under cabinet light is to be dimmed, it requires a more expensive low voltage dimmer than any one of the less expensive line voltage dimmers. In general, the line voltage xenon under cabinet lights give off with more light than the low voltage xenon under cabinet lights.

- WIRING
- Q) Which under cabinet lights can be hardwired to power?
- A) To "hardwire" a light fixture means to connect it directly to the source of electric power using a ROMEX® wire. If the fixture receives its power by plugging a cord & plug into the nearest electrical receptacle, then this is not considered to be a hardwired connection. Virtually all of our under cabinet lights can be hardwired directly or indirectly to power. For a full description of all of our hardwired under cabinet lights please examine this section: Hardwire Under Cabinet Lighting. Some of our under cabinet lights can be hardwired to power only if the proper Hardwire Box option is selected. To learn which fixtures can be plugged in please click Plug-In Under Cabinet Lights.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights can be plugged-in to the nearest electrical outlet?
- A) The LED Task Light w/28 LEDs, the Xenon Low Voltage Task Lights, the Xenon Puck Lights, the Xenon Ultra-Slim Lights, the Xenon Triangle Lights, the Xenon Gemstone Lights, the Xenon Eyeball Light, all of the Microfluorescent Light Fixtures, the Fluorescent Swing-Down Light Fixtures, and the Fluorescent Swivel Sticks may all be plugged into the nearest receptacle using a cord & plug. For a full description of all of our plug-in under cabinet lights please examine this section: Plug-In Under Cabinet Lighting. To learn which fixtures can be hardwired to power please click Hardwired Under Cabinet Lights.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights are linkable with flexible connectors or linking cables?
- A) The term, "linkable", means that two light fixtures can be easily connected electrically by simply plugging in a Flexible Connector or Linking Cable into the two fixtures. More than two "linkable" fixtures can be linked in one long line of fixtures. Most of the fixtures that are not "linkable" may be connected electrically to each other but this connection requires the use of household ROMEX® wire. For a full description of all of our linkable under cabinet lights please examine this section: Linkable Under Cabinet Lighting.
- Q) Can the flexible connectors or linking cables be used to connect an under cabinet light directly to line voltage power (120 volts)?
- A) Definitely not. Flexible connectors or linking cables are intended only to connect 2 under cabinet lights or an under cabinet light to a hardwire box. The hardwire box, in turn, can be connected directly to power with the appropriate ROMEX wire. ROMEX wire is specifically designed to connect lights of all kinds, including under cabinet lights, directly to power and approved to be used behind drywall.
- Q) Which under cabinet lights may be connected to each other with household ROMEX® wire?
- A) ROMEX wire is used throughout your household behind walls to wire your entire house. It usually is made up of 3 wires: one wire with white insulation (neutral), one wire with black insulation (hot), and one copper wire with no insulation (ground) and white insulation around all 3 wires holding them together. The ROMEX wire that is used to connect lighting fixtures is usually described as "14/2 with ground" (although this may vary with geographical location). The "14/2" refers to the two insulated wires that are each 14 gauge in diameter and the "ground" refers to the uninsulated copper wire. The Xenon Line Voltage Thin Task Lights, the Xenon Low Voltage Task Lights, and the Fluorescent Thin-Inch Fixtures are connected to power using ROMEX wire and may be connected to each other using ROMEX wire. All of the Microfluorescent Fixtures are simply too small in their profile for a ROMEX wire to be inserted in them.
- Q) How should dimmers be connected electrically?
- A) Dimmers should always be connected between the source of electricity and the under cabinet lights. For example, when a dimmer is used to control a low voltage transformer it is always connected between the source of the power and the primary side (the line voltage side; the 120V side) of the transformer; it is never connected to the secondary side (the low voltage side; the 12V or 24V) of the transformer.
- Q) What should I do if I need assistance with wiring the under cabinet lights?
- A) First, please refer to the Installation Instructions found on the Description tab of the appropriate product page in PDF format, which can then be printed on your printer for your convenience. Next, always check the local electrical codes and the National Electrical Code (NEC) before installing any lighting products. It is also wise to consult with a licensed electrician about any electrical details that you might have questions about and to make certain that you are satisfying all of the appropriate electrical codes in your geographical area. If you are installing low voltage lighting (with light bulbs that use less than 30 volts), you should ask your licensed electrician how much experience he/she has with low voltage lighting installations.
Valuable Information about Under Cabinet Lighting
-
- Our under cabinet lights come in a variety of sizes, lamp wattages, and with 3 different light sources - xenon, fluorescent, and LED.
- Functionality
- Under cabinet lights can be quite functional by providing very good and sometimes badly needed task lighting in a given situation such as under cabinet kitchen lighting, desk lighting, or even bookshelf lighting. Under cabinet lighting can make a kitchen, an office, or a hospital nurses' station a brighter, safer, and more pleasant place to perform tasks where one is not working in one's own shadows.
- Lighting Aesthetics
- The light provided by an under cabinet light can also be used to light an attractive vase, sculpture, framed photo, piece of china, curio, or crystal. Under cabinet lighting has the ability to give both a professional look and the look of warmth by providing another "layer of light" to the entire space. When under cabinet lighting is used properly it can give the space a look as though a professional may have been involved with the lighting design.
- Light Sources
- Under cabinet lights may use xenon, halogen, fluorescent, LED, or traditional incandescent light sources. Under cabinet lights with any of these light sources might provide a good deal of light, a modest amount of light, or just a hint of light. It is sometimes a good idea to control the under cabinet lighting with a dimmer switch since this can provide a good deal of lighting flexibility. This cannot usually be done with fluorescent light sources but fluorescent lighting is generally the most efficient in providing a given amount of light. Fluorescent light sources are also the coolest of all the light sources. This property can be extremely important in some instances depending on what is stored in the cabinet immediately above the light fixture or even what is lying 12 inches to 18 inches below the light fixture.
- Where Can They Be Used?
- Because of its small size an under cabinet light simply cannot provide good ambient lighting for a large space. At night, however, it might provide good "mood lighting" for a space or enough light to safely see when all the other lights are turned off. Under cabinet lighting can be used very successfully wherever there are cabinets and a need for good task lighting or accent lighting in a confined space: under kitchen cabinets, in museum display cases, within some trade show exhibits, on office desk tops, at hospital work stations, in bookcases in studies or libraries, in display cases in restaurants, under tavern shelves or under bars, in bathroom linen closets, within bedroom shelving, in wall nooks along hallways or stairways, in dining room hutches, in living room shelving, and family room entertainment centers.
- Where Should They Be Positioned?
- When under cabinet lighting is being used for task lighting such as in a kitchen it should be installed at or near the front of the cabinet to which it is attached. Your contractor may insist that you install it near the back wall but we suggest that you insist that it be installed as close to the face of the cabinet as possible. This position will provide the best and safest task lighting for working in the kitchen. If, on the other hand, the under cabinet lighting in question is intended to provide accent lighting for a work of art housed in a single cabinet, for example, then this under cabinet light fixture should be positioned just forward of center in order to properly light the art piece.

Customer Comments about our Under Cabinet Lights
|
"You had helpful info on lights recommended for various spaces (under counter) that I hadn't seen anywhere else - good pricing, too." – Donald C.
"My compliments on your web site. When I was researching under cabinets lighting options a few months ago, I came across your site and was impressed by the amount of useful, practical, and easily understood information I found there. That is why I came back to purchase today. Your web ordering process was also great. Thank you... keep up the good service." – Telford W.
"Best website to look at to compare types of under cabinet lighting. Good descriptions, etc." – Tracy R.
"EXCELLENT customer service. I ordered undercabinet lights and then received an email informing me that I would need a transformer to make these operational. This was indicated on the web page, however I failed to notice. I was able to order the needed transformer immediately so that installation was not delayed. All with free shipping!"
"I browsed thru quite a few web sites for (under) cabinet lighting but chose yours because it was well thought out and informational, more so than the others. Hope the rest of the process goes as well."
“Nice site and I shall return when I need additional items. Simple, clean and the information I needed for this project was available. Google is how I found you but I looked at a few other sites for under cabinet lighting options that failed to be clear or informative before getting to yours. You 'might' consider a little adwords marketing on Google but even without it you showed up. Thank you.”
"What a professional and helpful site. I was able to make my selection of under cabinet lighting in less than five minutes. I spent hours visiting other sites, like Sea Gull and Kichler and just came away confused. Your section titled 'Popular Under Cabinet Lighting Questions' is the cat's meow! Thank you - you have gained a long term customer!"
