Microfluorescent Light Fixtures FAQ
Pegasus Associates Lighting has the largest selection of microfluorescent light fixtures you will find anywhere. However, all of these choices may leave you a little confused. If so, please look at the following FAQ to help you make an informed decision about which fixtures are right for you.
- 2-Wire vs. 3-Wire
Q) Where should I use the 3-wire grounded microfluorescent fixtures?
- A) All 10 of our 3-wire grounded microfluorescent light fixtures are strongly recommended for projects that require grounding - especially commercial installations. The 3 microfluorescent fixtures that are 2-wire non-grounded can be used in residential installations.
- Adjustable Light Shields
Q) Once they're installed which microfluorescent light fixtures can be adjusted?
- A) The following 5 fixtures have a fully adjustable light shield that rotates 360° to direct the light where you want it.
Microfluorescent Adjustable T4 Grounded Light Fixtures
Microfluorescent Adjustable T5 Grounded Light Fixtures
Microfluorescent Adjustable T5 HO Grounded Light Fixtures
Microfluorescent Twin Adjustable T5 Light Fixtures
Microfluorescent Twin Adjustable T5 HO Light Fixtures
- Q) Where should I use adjustable microfluorescent light fixtures that have rotating adjustable shields?
- A) The 6 microfluorescent light fixtures that have adjustable shields that rotate 360° can be used in any situations that call for lamp or light shielding. For example, if adjustable microfluorescent light fixtures are installed near the front edge of two or more rows of shelves, the rotating shield can be adjusted so that a person looking at what is being lit on one of the shelves does not feel the visual discomfort caused by the direct glare of light.
- Ballasts, Electronic
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures use built-in electronic ballasts?
- A) All of the microfluorescent fixtures use lightweight built-in electronic ballasts that operate very quietly, unlike magnetic fluorescent ballasts.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures turn on instantly with no flickering?
- A) All of the microfluorescent light fixtures turn on instantly without flickering because they all use instant-start electronic ballasts.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are the most energy-efficient?
- A) Because they are fluorescent fixtures all of the microfluorescent light fixtures are energy-efficient, relative to most other light sources. The microfluorescent light fixtures that are the most efficacious (providing the greatest number of lumens/watt) are the higher wattage microfluorescent fixtures.
- Controls, Switching & Dimmability
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures come with their own on/off rocker switches?
- A) Almost every one of the microfluorescent fixtures comes with its own small on/off rocker switch located on the side of each fixture. Only a few 6-watt microfluorescent fixtures do not. Note that when several microfluorescent fixtures are linked together in a single group one or more of these fixtures may be turned off by using this rocker switch without affecting the other fixtures in the group. If one or more microfluorescent fixtures are hardwired to power using an approved Hardwire Box, then these fixtures may be controlled by a wall switch only as long as their rocker switches are left in the "on" position.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures can be installed so that a group of them can be controlled by a wall light switch?
- A) All of the microfluorescent fixtures can be linked together, connected to the appropriate Hardwire Box, and then controlled by a wall light switch.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are dimmable?
- A) None of the microfluorescent light fixtures are dimmable because none of them use dimmable electronic ballasts. For any fluorescent fixture to be dimmable it must use a special dimmable electronic ballast and be controlled by a special fluorescent dimmer.
- Cool vs. Hot
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures give off the least amount of heat?
- A) Because they are fluorescent fixtures all of the microfluorescent light fixtures give off very little heat, relative to most other light sources. However, those microfluorescent fixtures that use only 6 watts of power give off the least amount of heat.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures give off the greatest amount of heat?
- A) Because they are fluorescent fixtures all of the microfluorescent light fixtures give off very little heat, relative to most other light sources. However, those microfluorescent fixtures that use the greatest amount of wattage give off the greatest amount of heat.
- Hardwire vs. Plug-In
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures can be plugged into the nearest electrical outlet?
- A) All of the microfluorescent light fixtures, whether they are 2-wire or 3-wire models, can be plugged into the nearest electrical outlet.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures can be hardwired directly to power?
- A) To "hardwire" a light fixture directly to power means using a ROMEX® wire to directly connect the fixture to power. All of the microfluorescent fixtures are simply too small in their profile for a ROMEX® wire to be inserted into them. Thus, all of the microfluorescent light fixtures, whether they are 2-wire or 3-wire models, can be hardwired to power if, and only if, the proper Hardwire Box accessory is used. (Note: If the fixture receives its power by plugging a cord & plug into the nearest electrical receptacle, then this is not considered to be a hardwired connection.)
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures may be connected to each other with household ROMEX® wire?
- A) None because all of the microfluorescent fixtures are simply too small in their profile for a ROMEX® wire to be inserted into them. (Note: ROMEX® wire is used throughout your household behind walls to wire your entire house. It usually is made up of 3 wires: one wire with white insulation, one wire with black insulation, and one copper wire with no insulation and white insulation around all 3 wires holding them together. The ROMEX® wire that is used to connect lighting fixtures is usually described as "14/2 with ground" (although this may vary with geographical location). The "14/2" refers to the two insulated wires that are each 14 gauge in diameter and the "ground" refers to the uninsulated copper wire.)
- Installation & Linkability
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are the easiest to install?
- A) All of the microfluorescent light fixtures are extremely easy to install. Simply install 2 screw-in clips that are included with each fixture, then the microfluorescent fixture snaps into place.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures may be surface mounted?
- A) All of the microfluorescent light fixtures are intended to be surface mounted. Make sure that there is at least 0.5in of space between the sides of the microfluorescent fixture and another surface. This will allow the fixture to remain cool.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures may be recessed mounted?
- A) None of the microfluorescent light fixtures are intended to be recessed mounted.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are linkable?
- A) The term, "linkable", means that two light fixtures can be easily connected electrically by simply plugging in a Direct Connector or a Flexible Connector into the two fixtures. More than two "linkable" microfluorescent fixtures can be easily linked in one long line of fixtures.
- Q) Can microfluorescent light fixtures be mounted parallel to a given mounting surface as well as perpendicular?
- A) Yes. For many of our microfluorescent fixtures we offer a stainless steel Mounting Clip accessory for Vertical and Horizontal Mount. This unique clip allows the microfluorescent fixture to be mounted with the height dimension of the fixture to be either parallel or perpendicular to the mounting surface.
- Light Bulbs
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are supplied with light bulbs?
- A) Twelve of the 13 microfluorescent fixtures come with their own light bulbs. The one exception is the group of Hera SlimLite XL fixtures. When purchasing the Hera fixtures you must order the fixture, the light bulb, the plexiglass cover, and the power cord separately.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs provide very good color rendering?
- A) Twelve of the 13 microfluorescent light bulbs have a color rendering index (CRI) of 82+, which is considered to be very good. The light bulbs included with the Fluorescent T5 Low-Profile Fixtures have a CRI of about 75, which is considered good but not very good.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs produce light that is similar to the light produced by an incandescent light bulb?
- A) If the fluorescent light bulb has a color temperature of 3000K or is called warm white, then the fluorescent lamp will produce light that is similar to the light produced by an incandescent light bulb.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs produce light that is similar to the light produced by a xenon light bulb?
- A) If the fluorescent light bulb has a color temperature of 3000K or is called warm white, then the fluorescent lamp will produce light that is similar to the light produced by a xenon light bulb.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs produce light that is similar to the light produced by a halogen light bulb?
- A) If the fluorescent light bulb has a color temperature of 3500K or is called neutral white, then the fluorescent lamp will produce light that is similar to the light produced by a halogen light bulb.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs produce light that is similar to the light produced by the sun?
- A) If the fluorescent light bulb has a color temperature of 6400K or is called daylight, then the fluorescent lamp will produce light that is similar to the light produced by the sun.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs come in colors such as red, blue, and green?
- A) T4 fluorescent lamps come in red, blue, and green.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light bulbs offer “black light” light bulbs (emitting UVA rays)?
- A) T4 “black light” fluorescent lamps are offered as accessories on some microfluorescent fixtures.
- Q) What are the differences between T4 and T5 light bulbs?
- A) T4 lamps are 4/8in in diameter while T5 lamps are 5/8in in diameter. T4 lamps have a rated life of 16,000 hours while T5 lamps have a rated life of 20,000 hours.
- Line Voltage vs. Low Voltage
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are considered to be line voltage fixtures?
- A) Any light fixture that uses the available voltage (usually 120 volts) directly and does not use a transformer to step down the voltage from line voltage to a lower voltage (like 12 volts or 24 volts) is considered to be a line voltage fixture. Thus, all of the microfluorescent light fixtures, except for the 24-volt microfluorescent fixtures are considered to be line voltage light fixtures.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are considered to be low voltage fixtures?
- A) Any light fixture that operates on 12 volts or 24 volts is considered to be a low voltage fixture. The two microfluorescent fixtures that operate on 24 volts, AC, 50-60 Hz are considered to be low voltage light fixtures.
- Low Profile vs. High Profile
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures have the lowest profile?
- A) The Microfluorescent T4 Fixture has the smallest profile at 0.75in wide and 1-3/8in high, which is not that much different from the highest profile fixture identified below.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures have the highest profile?
- A) The Microfluorescent Adjustable T5 High Output Grounded Light Fixture has the highest profile at 7/8in wide by 1-7/8in high, which is not that much different from the lowest profile fixture identified above.
- Short vs. Long
Q) Which microfluorescent light fixtures are the shortest?
- A) The shortest microfluorescent fixtures are the 6-watt fixtures that measure about 9.5in in length without the power cord attached and about 11.5in in length with the power cord attached.
- Q) Which microfluorescent light fixture is the longest?
- A) The longest microfluorescent fixtures are about 58in-59in in length without the power cord attached and about 60in-61in in length with the power cord attached.
