- A) CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. If a bathroom ceiling exhaust fan is rated at 70 CFM, this means that it can remove up to 70 cubic feet of air per minute from a bathroom.
- Q) How do I know what size exhaust fan to purchase for my bathroom?
- A) Bathroom exhaust fans are certified by the volume of air "exhausted" out of the room within a certain period of time (CFM). To find the recommended fan capacity for your bathroom, simply multiply the bathroom square footage by 1.1 for an 8ft ceiling or multiply by 1.5 for a 9ft ceiling. For example, if the square footage of your 6ft by 10ft bathroom is 60 square feet, then you should use a bathroom exhaust fan with a rating of at least 66 CFM if the ceiling is 8 feet or 90 CFM if the ceiling is 9 feet.
- Q) How does a bathroom exhaust fan incorporate a night light into its design?
- A) In addition to using a standard light source the exhaust fan also has a small 7W incandescent light bulb located behind the light diffuser which provides enough light to see in the bathroom at night. If the exhaust fan has both of these light sources, this means that the exhaust fan needs to be controlled by 3 different switches: one for the fan, one for the standard light source, and one for the night light.
