- Uses: an energy-efficient lighting alternative to conventional recessed lighting for both business and home lighting

IDEA is one of the most prominent design competitions in the world, celebrating cutting-edge products and product concepts. Selected from 1,517 entries, the juried awards are co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America and BusinessWeek.
Lighting for Tomorrow, an independent lighting fixture competition, named this 6in LED Downlight Module for Recessed Lights the Grand Prize Winner for the 2007 Fixture Design Competition in the Solid State Lighting Category. LIGHT SOURCE
- CREE LEDs: this proprietary LED technology from CREE delivers high quality white light
- Light Output: 650 lumens (40 to 60 watt incandescent equivalent)

It delivers high efficacy light with beautiful, warm color characteristics by mixing the light from yellow and red LEDs. - Q) Why should I buy the PLR6 instead of an incandescent recessed downlight?
- A) The PLR6 is a much more efficient, comfortable, and "green" solution. The PLR6 uses 85% less energy than a conventional incandescent, generates no infrared heat and lasts more than 20 times longer than an incandescent light bulb. The PLR6 provides efficiency without compromise.
- Q) Why should I buy the PLR6 instead of a CFL (compact fluorescent lamp)?
- A) The PLR6 lasts 5 times longer than a CFL. It contains no toxic mercury and provides substantially improved color rendering over a fluorescent light bulb. It is more efficient than a CFL, but looks and performs like an incandescent light bulb.
- Q) What is the difference between the PLR6 and the PLR6C?
- A) The PLR6 delivers light at a color temperature of 2700K. This means that it has a “warm” appearance similar to most incandescent light bulbs. The 3500K has a “cooler” appearance and seems to be the preference for commercial environments because its color temperature is closer to a fluorescent light bulb.
- Q) How does the PLR6 output compare to an incandescent?
- A) The PLR6 has a comparable delivered lumen output to a 65-watt BR30, 50-watt PAR30, or a 100-watt

- A) The PLR6 has a CRI of 92, which is considered excellent.
- Q) How did you test for CRI, color temperatures, and photometry?
- A) We measured the CRI and the color temperature in our integrating sphere and have validated its performance and photometric performance with independent testing labs, Lighting Sciences, and the CSA (Canadian Standards Association).
- Q) Is each PLR6 tested before it is shipped?
- A) Yes, each PLR6 is individually tested and tuned to the optimal color point before shipment.
- Q) How do you keep the color of the PLR6 consistent?
- A) One of the biggest strengths of our technology is that it allows for exceptional color control and consistency. We dial in the color of each light to the optimal color point on the assembly line. We utilize active color maintenance to ensure that color consistency is maintained over the life of the product. Our specification is equal to or tighter than specifications for compact fluorescent lamps.
- Q) What is the efficiency of the PLR6?
- A) The optical system is designed to deliver light with minimal optical losses. However, efficiency is somewhat difficult to measure since there are no lamps, per se, and the LEDs are permanently integrated within the optical system. A better measure of the PLR6's performance is efficacy.
- Q) What is the efficacy of the PLR6?
- A) Both the PLR6 (2700K) and the PLR6C (3500K) have a nominal delivered light output of 650 lumens and input of 12 watts for a delivered efficacy of greater than 54 lumens per watt.
- Q) Will the .ies file give me accurate foot-candle levels for this fixture?
- A) The IES file is based on photometric testing conducted by Lighting Sciences Inc. in accordance with IES procedures.
- Q) Does the PLR6 meet California's Title 24 standard for efficacy?
- A) Yes, the PLR6 exceeds California's Title 24 for high efficacy luminaires. Please note, for new construction in California, please utilize the GU-24 base instead of the screw-in Edison base..
- Q) What are the differences between the PLR6 and the PLR6-GU24?
- A) The PLR6-GU24 has been designed specifically for new construction in California and other areas where high efficacy line voltage sockets are required. Some jurisdictions prefer the GU-24 socket because it prevents users from replacing the PLR6 with low efficacy incandescent light bulbs.
- Q) How do I know if I can use the PLR6 in my home or office?
- A) The PLR6 is a recessed downlight module for new construction and retrofit that installs easily in most standard six inch recessed IC or non-IC housings. Please refer to our Can Compatibility document (PDF) for an up-to-date compatibility matrix.
- Q) Is the PLR6 difficult to install?
- A) No, the PLR6 installs into any existing can simply and easily. Please refer to our Installation Instructions for detailed documentation.
- Q) What is your beam angle?
- A) The PLR6 was designed to deliver an optimal distribution of light that balances the amount of light delivered to the horizontal surfaces and vertical surfaces. The distribution is more sophisticated than what may be defined by a simple beam angle. It is a general illuminator that delivers an optimal amount of light when utilized with typical recessed downlight spacing.
- Q) Is an IC or non-IC housing/can recommended for use with the PLR6?
- A) The PLR6 works with both the IC and non-IC housings. The PLR6 produces substantially less heat than the lamps utilized in standard recessed housings. (IC = insulation contact; that is, an IC recessed housing can come in contact with ceiling insulation)
- Q) What is the minimum operating temperature for the LR6?
- A) Currently, we state the minimum operating temperature for the PLR6 as zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). It is likely that the PLR6 will operate at lower temperatures. We will be investigating this further and characterizing its performance in the next few months.
- Q) What is the maximum operating temperature for the PLR6?
- A) We have tested the PLR6 within both IC and non-IC housings/cans in very demanding environments simulating a hot attic environment (up to 60 degrees Celsius, 140 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of our integrated thermal management features, even under these extremes, the maximum junction temperature of the PLR6 LEDs is less than the manufacturer specified maximums.
- Q) Does the PLR6 have a damp or wet rating?
- A) The PLR6 is rated for damp locations. We expect to have a wet listing in the future.
- Q) Do you offer fixtures with directional lighting?
- A) The PLR6 has a broad distribution of light. However, the PLE6 accessory is an adjustable eyeball trim that allows the user to aim and focus light towards a wall or other large vertical surface.
- Q) Do you have a spot distribution light?
- A) Not at this time.
- Q) Do you have any lights for markets other than North America?
- A) Our current products are 110-120V. We will have products designed for 220V to 240V, 50Hz in late 2008.
- Q) Do your products contain any lead?
- A) CREE products are lead-free and RoHS compliant (Restriction of Hazardous Substances).
- Q) What type of aluminum is the PLR6 housing made from?
- A) The PLR6 is constructed from 100% recycled aluminum.
